Erik ten Hag ‘may already have next job lined up’ after Man Utd if he gets sack

Ten Hag insists Man Utd have plenty to play for after European exit

Erik ten Hag could already have another job on the horizon if he faces the Manchester United sack in the coming weeks, according to surprising reports. The Dutchman is under intense scrutiny after Tuesday’s Champions League group-stage exit became the latest blow in a disastrous second season in charge.

United fell to a toothless 1-0 defeat to Group A winners Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, condemning them to rock bottom behind FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

Ten Hag’s side accumulated just four points from their six Champions League games, only winning once thanks to Andre Onana’s last-gasp penalty save against Copenhagen.

But the 27-year-old goalkeeper was highly culpable for United’s early exit, with a flurry of mistakes contributing to eight points lost from winning positions.

United are also out of the Carabao Cup – ending their defence with a 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle United – and are sixth in the Premier League, nine points off leaders Liverpool.

The club’s state of flux has shielded Ten Hag as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS await for their £1.3billion deal for a 25 per cent stake to be ratified.

But once the 71-year-old businessman inherits sporting control from the Glazers, 12 losses in 24 games this term may leave the United boss in a vulnerable position.

Ten Hag would be the fifth manager given the sack since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement if Sir Jim opts for his own appointment.

But while his predecessors have taken breaks from football after their tenures at Old Trafford, the Dutchman could dive straight into a new challenge.

According to Germany-based reporter Jan Aage Fjortoft, murmurs in the country suggest Ten Hag could become Borussia Dortmund’s new head coach.

Dortmund advisor Matthias Sammer previously employed Ten Hag at Bayern Munich in 2013, where he guided Bayern Munich II to the Regionalliga Bayern before leaving for Utrecht two years later.

Fjortoft’s report comes as a surprise despite Dortmund’s struggles in the Bundesliga this term, trailing leaders Bayer Leverkusen by 11 points in fifth after 14 games.

Edin Terzic signed a contract to become the permanent Dortmund manager last summer, having previously lifted the 2021 DFB-Pokal as interim boss before Marco Rose took charge for one season.

Terzic has earned praise for helping BVB navigate through the group of death in the Champions League, but the report points toward potential developments regarding Ten Hag in the new year.

The 53-year-old’s focus will no doubt be on ensuring his project at United isn’t cut short, though, after making such a promising start.
