Erik ten Hag issues telling Jadon Sancho response as Man Utd boss breaks silence

Jadon Sancho to train away from Man Utd squad until ‘discipline issue’ resolved

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag refused to refer to Jadon Sancho by his name while speaking for the first time since the winger publicly accused him of lying. The Red Devils boss made his stance on Sancho clear ahead of Saturday’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion, wasting little time discussing the banished 23-year-old.

Ten Hag first dodged questions about his public spat with Sancho, instead praising his side’s performance in the late 3-1 defeat at Arsenal. He said: “We close the game, we work on the feedback, the data team feedback, we played very well very Arsenal, we trained very well, we played very well, we deserved much more in Arsenal.

“It was not on our side; that was the outcome of our analysis, and you can see our progress against a good Arsenal. Minimum, we have to get a draw there, and we could have won. We came back, and we trained very well. We are ready for it [Brighton].”

And when pushed for an answer on Sancho, Ten Hag offered a blunt but telling response as he looked to push his No 25 to the back of his mind. “I think everything is said. So the squad is strong, in good spirits and in a good mood going into the game,” Ten Hag noted.

United will be without two wing options in Sancho and Antony, who Ten Hag said was ‘disappointed’ as he addresses three allegations of abuse in Brazilian media. Antony, who strongly denies any wrongdoing, is on a leave of absence, and his manager has ‘no idea’ when he will return to contention.

But Ten Hag is full of optimism ahead of what promises to be a tough test against Brighton at Old Trafford. The Dutchman added: “You sometimes have setbacks in seasons. Players are injured or, for other reasons, are not available, so you construct a squad.

“The squad is very good, and the players who are available are motivated to give a good performance.”

On Thursday, United confirmed that Ten Hag had banished Sancho from the first team as the club weighs up disciplinary action.

“Jadon Sancho will remain on a personal training programme away from the first-team group, pending resolution of a squad discipline issue,” a statement read.

Sancho’s record of 12 goals and six assists in 82 appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Ten Hag has wasted away the excitement of his highly-anticipated Old Trafford arrival.

He is reportedly open to leaving United in January, which would end a disastrous two-and-a-half-year spell back in England after his £73million switch from Borussia Dortmund.
