BBC commentator Jermaine Jenas fumed as Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand took a lengthy period of time to be substituted after he suffered a head injury that eventually saw him brought off in the first half of England’s opening World Cup game. Jenas slammed the “ridiculous” thought that the player could have been kept on the pitch after a collision.

“This is where it shouldn’t be his call,” Jenas said. “[Ehsan] Hajsafi is getting involved and tell him to stay on the pitch. He’s asking for more time, he’s clearly not in a good place. I don’t see how this is right, I really don’t.

“It seems like he’s being forced to stay on, it’s ridiculous. It’s the responsibility of the medical team to make the call, make the decision. We’re at a major tournament in 2022, constantly talking about concussion in the game and the long-term effects of dementia and this happens. It’s out of order.”

Beiranvand will be a big miss for Iran, as he was substituted for Hossein Hosseini to make his competitive debut, not just for his shot-stopping ability but he has become known for his signature long throws.

Fans did not get the chance to see his throw, longer than some goalkeepers can kick the ball, as he was brought off as part of a concussion substitution which allows England to make six changes in the game.

Jenas was not happy that there was a chance that Beiranvand stayed on the pitch and continued. “It’s just really unacceptable,” he added. “We’ve said our peace on it but it really is. It doesn’t matter [how important he is], it doesn’t matter. Beiranvand shouldn’t be on the pitch now. I think it’s a joke, I really do.

“If Beiranvand has to miss ten days for his health and his safety, then so be it. That’s why these protocols are in place. I don’t see how him carrying on is right. This is ridiculous. It’s almost as if he’s been forced to carry on here.

“It’s 2022 and we are having so many discussions about concussion protocols and how it can lead to dementia. This is not ok.”

Beiranvand was holding his head and due to blood had a tissue up his nose and required a new shirt as it looked like he was set to continue, before Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz substituted him off.
