England boss Gareth Southgate was slammed by Liverpool icon Graeme Souness for not taking Harry Kane off earlier in their World Cup opener win over Iran on Monday, as the Scot claimed that the Three Lions captain will have been left with “micro bleeds” in his ankle. The Tottenham star picked up an ankle knock early in the second half, but Southgate waited over 20 minutes before taking him off and the striker has since had a scan on the injury.

Early reports suggest that the FA are optimistic that Kane will be able to play on Friday against the United States, but Souness slammed Southgate for not taking every precaution with England’s leading man and suggested that he may have had a bleed in his ankle.

“That was a bad one,” Souness told ITV. “The guy landed and his weight went on Harry’s ankle, he will have had micro bleeds in that ankle and you are still running on it for 27 minutes more.

“That was a bad one, he will have had a bleed there, so for 27 minutes he will have been running about on that ankle, bleeding. It’s just totally wrong, he should have been off immediately and it should have been on ice and in an elevated position immediately.

“I am watching England with a manager’s head on, and when I see Harry Kane’s challenge I am thinking ‘This boy has got a history with his ankles’, he stayed down for a bit, he wasn’t right, he was walking gingerly on it and I am thinking he has to come off now.

“Now that happens in the 48th minute, he went off in the 75th, he had 27 minutes running on that ankle. Some players need saving from themselves. He is a goalscorer, he is thinking there’s goals in this game against Iran, I am staying on. I think that’s a mistake, I think the manager should have had him off immediately.”

“You’re 3-0 up at that time as well, you don’t need to risk Harry any more. I had written about this competition prior to coming here and I think England could do really, really well as long as Harry scores lots of goals.

“I am not sure when they are playing proper teams who else is going to get goals apart from Harry Kane. I see that as something that was avoidable and that for me is down to the manager, I think the player who wants to be the top scorer again in this tournament would act selfishly in this situation, he needed saving from himself there.”

Kane was able to train with the rest of the squad on Wednesday ahead of the clash against the US, and team-mate Jordan Pickford provided an update on the captain. “I think he is good, probably a bit sore but he’s out on the grass today with us. He’s fine, yeah,” the goalkeeper said.
