Dwight Yorke and Andy Gray in heated row as Bruno Fernandes misses Liverpool

Dwight Yorke and Andy Gray clashed over who was at fault for Bruno Fernandes' absence for Manchester United away at Liverpool.

Fernandes was suspended for the trip to Anfield on Sunday (December 17) having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in last weekend's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. The United skipper was booked in the 83rd minute with the game already gone.

Red Devils legend Yorke suggested manager Erik ten Hag could've prompted him to get booked in the previous match, or he should've taken him off to avoid the one-match ban for one of their most important matches of the season.

His beIN Sports co-pundit Gray disagreed, arguing: "But you don't take your captain off, do you? Not if you trust him not to be stupid."

"In that situation you take him off," hit back Yorke, who had Jason McAteer in agreement with him. But Gray wasn't having any of it.

"No, that's a cop out," he declared. "He knows as captain of his club, the biggest game in the country is coming up. Why is he captain if he can't have the responsibility of behaving himself?"

Yorke continued to insist that Ten Hag had to take action, knowing what Fernandes' temperament is like. "He's obviously a bad loser, he loses it," he said.

"At 3-0 down, you normally won't take your captain off, I get it. Taking your top striker is off is the same as taking your captain off."

"No it ain't," Gray responded, with Yorke adding: "I've seen Roy Keane and other people be substituted towards the end of the game. I think it just comes down to game management."

Host Richard Keys explained how four of Fernandes' five bookings this calendar year have come when United were losing, with two because of dissent.
