Diego Costa has Arsenal ‘waiting to make January move’ as Atletico confirm exit

Arsenal could approach Diego Costa after he agreed to end his stay at Atletico Madrid.

The 32-year-old striker had not been able to fine his best form since he returned to the Spanish capital back in 2018, scoring 19 times across 81 appearances.

Although he recently spoke about a potential partnership with summer arrival Luis Suarez, his request to end his contract has now been accepted by the club.

A move to the Emirates would likely annoy some of Costa’s former supporters after the Spain international fired Chelsea to Premier League titles in 2015 and 2017.

Spanish outlet AS have reported that the Gunners have been following the situation of Costa for some time, and that the player himself is open to many options as he considers his choices.

A move to north London could also be influenced by his former team-mates Willian and David Luiz, who are also from his birth country of Brazil.

His early departure is likely to be influenced by the form of Suarez, who has scored seven goals in his 10 La Liga appearances since he was forced out of Barcelona to the dismay of Lionel Messi.

Los Rojiblancos sit top of the table and level on points with rivals Real Madrid, but they have two games in hand over Zinedine Zidane’s side.

He said of his potential partnership with Suarez back in September: "He is very good, one of us can do the fighting and the other can do the biting.

"We are very lucky to have Luis, I don't understand how Barca could have let him leave.

"He's going to help us with lots of goals as well as his warrior spirit and his hunger to win trophies.

“I hope he can help us win another trophy for our fans, but we need to take each game as it comes."

The full club statement reads: ”Atletico de Madrid and Diego Costa have reached an agreement for the termination of the striker's contract, which was to end on June 30, 2021.

"The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract.

"The club thanks Diego Costa for his dedication during these years and wishes him well in the next stage of his professional career."
