David Moyes sends Premier League rivals warning about Jesse Lingard

David Moyes believes it is right that resurgent Jesse Lingard is up for Premier League Player of the Month.

The 28-year-old winger, on loan from Manchester United, has scored three goals and provided two assists in his first five appearances since moving to West Ham at the end of January.

Lingard has stunned fans and neutrals with his impressive fitness and form after barely featuring for United before leaving two months ago, having played just 179 minutes of first-team action with bit-part roles in the EFL and FA Cups.

But Moyes, whose men host Leeds on Monday night, said: “Jesse has been really driven to play. He came in right away in training and he does not carry any weight.

“He is in good physical condition and is getting better with match practice. He is still getting there and I think he is still four or five games into it and we are still trying to get Jesse in peak condition.

“It is great that he has had such an impact as there is a lot of talk around players who come and go in January. But to get someone in who makes a difference is not an easy thing to do.”

Also nominated for Player of the Month are United’s Bruno Fernandes, Fulham ’s Joachim Andersen, Leeds’ Raphinha, Leicester winger Harvey Barnes, Manchester City duo Joao Cancelo and Ilkay Gundogan and Wolves ’ Ruben Neves.

Meanwhile Moyes – who could have keeper Lukasz Fabianski back from injury on Monday – believes West Ham could yet pull off a Cheltenham-style shock in the race for the top four.

Everton and Chelsea are now the big challengers to the Irons who will move back into a Champions League slot with victory on Monday.

But Moyes referred to the horse racing festival – renowned for big-priced shocks – to reaffirm his belief that his men can stay the distance in the chase for the top four.

He said: We are the big outsiders for the Champions League but if you watch the Cheltenham races sometimes the outsider comes through and I am hoping that is us.”
