‘David de Gea to Newcastle for 6 months’ has fans enjoying ‘funniest thing ever’

Fans are relishing the potential of Newcastle signing David de Gea with some calling it "the funniest to ever happen".

The former Manchester United goalkeeper has been without a club since leaving the Premier League giants this past summer as his contract expired. While both parties were initially in negotiations to keep the Spaniard at the club, talks broke down leading to his departure after 12 years at the club.

As he remains a free agent, he's been touted with several moves with a potential transfer to Newcastle on the cards following a report from the Daily Mail that states Eddie Howe's side are considering signing the 33-year-old due to the injury of Nick Pope in Newcastle's 1-0 victory against Man United on Saturday (December 2).

The 31-year-old dislocated his shoulder in the victory and according to The Telegraph, he's expected to miss four to five months of action. While the Magpies have Martin Dubravka set to deputise for the England keeper as well as Loris Karius waiting in the wings, that hasn't stopped fans from theorising whether a move for De Gea, 33, could be on the cards.

One X (formerly Twitter) user said: "De Gea to Newcastle for 6 months will be the funniest thing to ever happen" while another also saw the funny side to it by writing: "It would be the funniest thing ever if De Gea signed for Newcastle in January".

The ex-Spain international also did his part in drumming up interest of a move to Newcastle after taking to social media following United's defeat this past weekend.

He posted a singular freezing cold emoji as some fans interpreted the post as an attempt to "rattle United fans" while another instead said: "Triggered an entire fanbase with one emoji describing the weather."
