Darwin Nunez was left looking somewhat embarrassed after missing a sitter during Liverpool’s clash with Luton Town on Sunday evening.
The incident took place in the 69th minute of the game when Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed the ball into Mohammed Salah at the back post.
Salah played it back to Nunez, who was standing on the opposite post. All he had to do was guide the ball into net as Thomas Kaminski had already been beaten.
However, Nunez fired over the bar and into row Z. His team-mates couldn’t believe what they had witnessed, putting their heads in their hands.
Thankfully for Nunez, the offside flag went up immediately after the incident as Salah was deemed offside. But, that didn’t stop fans from criticising the 24-year-old’s error.

Jamie Carragher, who was part of Sky’s commentary team, said: ‘He might be a little relieved the flag went up. I still don’t think people will forget it. I think Salah might have actually been onside.’
Meanwhile, fans took to X to share their opinion. One social media user said: ‘I swear Nunez has an open goal miss every single game.’
Another added: ‘I have never considered Nunez to be a good striker. He lacks precision, too anxious to shoot the ball, clumsy and uncoordinated in front of goal.’
While one fan wrote: ‘I absolutely adore Darwin Nunez but that miss was unforgivable he needs to learn how to not whack everything, that was a simple tap in. Has to have lot more finesse in front of goal’.
Another added: ‘Darwin will score complex goals and miss easy ones. I don’t understand my striker’. While one said: ‘Oh for God sake we need to sell Darwin. What was that miss honestly?’
The missed opportunity proved costly for Liverpool as Tahith Chong found the back of the net for Luton Town just moments later to see the Reds go 1-0 down.
Thankfully for the Reds, Luis Diaz found the back of the net in the 90+5minute of the game to see Liverpool secure a point.
