Football Focus presenter Dan Walker has announced that he will leave the show after 12 years next month.

The 44-year-old will continue in his roles with BBC Breakfast and BBC Sport, and will be on hand to cover the Tokyo Olympics later this year.

Walker has expressed his gratitude to the team behind Football Focus and the viewers, with his replacement not yet confirmed by the BBC.

Walker said: “It has been an amazing 12 years and I have loved every second of it.

"I am so proud of the job we’ve done, the changes we’ve made and issues we’ve looked at while the football landscape changed immeasurably.

"I’d like to say thank you to the amazing team at Focus who put so much into the show each week and thank you to the audience for tuning in every Saturday.”

Philip Bernie, Head of TV at BBC Sport, added: “Dan has been exceptional as presenter of Football Focus for the last 12 years.

"He is a top-class broadcaster who has brought authority, wit and fun to the show, always working so well with such warmth with the guests on the show.

"We are extremely grateful for all he given to Focus, and will continue to enjoy watching him on the BBC’s sport output as well as the wider BBC.”

Walker added in a video posted on social media: "Hello, I have some news.

"This is going to be my last season presenting Football Focus. It's been a real pleasure and an amazing 12 years. I can honestly say I have loved every single second of it.

"I really proud about the job we have done, the changes we have made to the show and the issues that we have looked at."

The update comes after A Question Of Sport trio Sue Barker, Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell were all axed in a shake-up of the 50-year-old show.

A BBC spokesman said in September: "We would like to thank Sue for her enormous contribution as the show's longest-reigning host over the last 23 years, and Matt and Phil for their excellent team captaincy over 16 and 12 years respectively.

"Together they have ensured A Question Of Sport remains a firm favourite with the BBC One audience.

"Sue, Matt and Phil's final series will be broadcast next year before the series returns with a new team."
