Copenhagen’s ‘beautiful’ Bobby Charlton chant hailed as wreath put on his seat
Copenhagen fans have been lauded for their respect shown before kick-off against Manchester United as they joined in with the ‘One Bobby Charlton’ chant.
An emotional beginning to United’s huge Champions League clash against Copenhagen was incredibly observed by the travelling fans, who received praise from fans on Twitter regarding their conduct.
Tuesday night was United’s first home game since the passing of club legend Sir Bobby Charlton, and the poignant occasion was marked by a laying of a wreath in the Old Trafford centre circle before kick-off as Erik ten Hag, Alex Stepney and youngster Daniel Gore paid their respects.

A lone piper played, evoking memories of Sir Matt Busby’s remembrance at the ground in January 1994, before a minutes silence followed. All four corners of the ground, including the travelling Danish contingency, then sang ‘There’s only one Bobby Charlton’ in a moving beginning to proceedings.
Respect was also paid in the stand as a wreath was laid in the empty seat of Charlton’s in the director’s section. A message attached read: “Loved, adored, never forgotten”.

A video posted to Twitter saw the away corner at Old Trafford filled with white scarfs held aloft by Copenhagen supporters who paid their tribute to not just a United legend, but a footballing icon. United fans in the comments section labelled them: “A credit to their great club”. A second added: “That’s a beautiful gesture from the away fans”.
On a must-win evening for United should they look to have any chance of having qualification from Group B in their own hands, saw a slow start but the Red Devils who had lost both previous games against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
The visitors hit the post five minutes in in an early scare for a United side who didn’t get going in the opening 45 minutes and were lucky not to be behind at half-time.
