Cole Palmer grew up as massive Rooney-loving Man Utd fan despite being at City
Cole Palmer has dealt another blow to Manchester City fans following his last-gasp leveller for Chelsea on Sunday.
The 21-year-old has revealed he grew up supporting Manchester United, despite spending over a decade in City's academy, and admitted Wayne Rooney was his childhood idol. Speaking about the United legend, Palmer beamed: "What a player. When I was growing up I used to watch all the football and the one that sticks in my mind is Rooney. Ever since I was a little kid he has been my footballing hero."
The Blues midfielder was called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad for the very first time following his heroics against his former club at Stamford Bridge, where his 94th-minute penalty bookended a thrilling 4-4 draw.

His goal was his fourth in nine Premier League games for Chelsea, and as they've all been penalties he's earned himself the nickname 'cool Palmer'. He needs just two more strikes to equal his tally of six for City, which he achieved in 41 appearances.
Palmer's departure was something of a surprise given how highly-rated he was at the Etihad Stadium. He netted a corker in City's Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in August, but sealed a £42million move to west London a couple of weeks later amid a lack of assurances over first team minutes.

Palmer is expected to make his England bow at some point over the next week, with back-to-back Euro 2024 qualifying dead-rubbers against Malta and North Macedonia coming up. The Three Lions have already sealed passage to the tournament in Germany and need just a point to clinch top spot, meaning Southgate has the opportunity to do a little rotating.
