Chelsea transfer chief Marina Granovskaia decides on next deal after Edouard Mendy joins

Chelsea are on the brink of completing the transfer of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes. The Blues have been very busy in the summer window with seven signings already arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea fans will hope to see some of them this evening when Frank Lampard’s side take on Brighton in their first game of the new Premier League season.

Kai Havertz joined for £89million in the latest deal with the likes of Timo Werner, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech all joining the club as well.

Malang Sarr also joined as a free agent from Nice while Xavier Mbuyamba was signed on a five-year deal from Barcelona, although he will not feature in the first-team.

Chelsea are now on the brink of signing Mendy who will provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal.

Lampard was unimpressed with the Spaniard last season as he made a number of errors in crucial games.

A deal for Mendy is expected to be completed in just day for a free in the region of £20m.

Football London claim Chelsea won’t be done there though and that transfer chief Marina Granovskaia will turn her attention to West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

David Moyes insists there has been no bid yet for their prized asset though.

“It was always the plan, there was no intention to lose Declan Rice,” Moyes said before his side lost 2-0 to Newcastle on the opening day of the season.

“We have had no bids and no enquiries. There is a lot of speculation but I can only tell you what I know.

“I wouldn’t want to lose him anyway because he is too big a player for us, he is too important and a big part of the squad.

“He’s been captain already, I think he is learning a lot of leadership from Mark Noble, so I hope in the future we will have an incredibly talented footballer with great leadership skills and will be the captain of West Ham.”

Chelsea take on Brighton in the Premier League from 8.15pm this evening.

Ahead of the match Lampard has rubbished comments criticising the amount of money the club has spent.

He said: “The reality is, with probably the exception of Leicester which was an incredible story, most clubs that win the league in the modern day have recruited well and at a high level money wise.

“You can go through the Liverpool players: Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Salah – incredible players that came at a very high price. So Liverpool have done it, and they’ve done it over a period of time.

“It’s par for the course, we all know that. There’s no point doing the maths for it.

“We know Liverpool have spent at a high level, we know they have an incredible coach, we know they have incredible players, and the really smart thing they’ve done is believe in the coach and the system for a number of years.

“In terms of where we are at, we have to not focus too much on what other teams, managers, supporters, radio, media are saying. We have to worry about what we can do on the training pitch. That’s the only thing that will define us.

“I’m really pleased with the business we’ve done, and now I want us to be excited as a team to work hard and get results.”
