Chelsea have contacted the agent of Boubacar Kamara, a young midfielder who is also believed to have caught the eye of Manchester United and Newcastle. The Blues are set to face competition from around Europe for his signature, but even if they make progress, there may be a roadblock which stops the deal going through over the next few weeks.

Chelsea’s progress faltered over the festive period with Thomas Tuchel’s side dropping points in three of their last four Premier League games.

A return to winning ways was ensured on Wednesday, however, thanks to a 2-0 EFL Cup semi-final first-leg victory over Tottenham.

They managed the result despite fielding a depleted playing squad, with Malang Sarr in defence and Saul Niguez in midfield.

While that aspect of the victory was promising, the threat of Covid outbreaks could encourage the Blues to recruit and ensure squad depth.

According to FootMercato, Chelsea have already contacted Kamara’s agent after an impressive start to the season with Marseille.

Unfortunately for the Stamford Bridge faithful, however, the player himself does not want to leave the French club this month.

The Blues’ contact was therefore with a view to a summer signing, but they will have to fend off rival interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich who have also supposedly made contact.

Kamara broke into the Marseille first-team as a teenager and has since gone on to make more than 100 Ligue 1 appearances.

At 22-years-old, he still has plenty of time left to improve in defensive midfield which, in light of his current performances, has excited some of Europe’s top clubs.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and his United counterpart, Ralf Rangnick, are believed to be among the interested parties, and may throw their hats into the ring.

Now into the final six months of his contract, clubs are at liberty to thrash out a pre-contract agreement with the player.

That means that Chelsea could get their hands on one of France’s brightest young talents for free in the summer.

While fans would surely be pleased to see the youngster come through the door, they may have found an in-house solution to a potential midfield shortage thanks to Saul Niguez’s promising performance against Spurs.

“I’m very happy he had a performance like that, which was a huge step forward,” said Tuchel.

“He’s more happy, more free in training; I see it every day. He played better when he came on against Wolverhampton.

“He has digested his experiences here in the beginning, when he maybe did not expect it to be like this.”
