Chelsea still lack leaders in their team despite spending over £200million on new talent this summer, according to former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves. Following last year’s transfer ban, Chelsea have decided to go all out to improve their squad in this window. Germany internationals Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, former Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech and England left-back Ben Chilwell have all joined the Blues for hefty fees.
Defenders Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr have also joined on free transfers, though the latter is set to spend this season out on loan.
But despite the arrival of former Paris Saint-Germain captain Silva, Hargreaves still thinks there is a lack of leadership in the Chelsea squad.
Comparing Lampard’s side to the Chelsea teams the Blues head coach used to be a part of, Hargreaves claimed there is still an important aspect missing for the Stamford Bridge club to reach the next level.
“I just think back to those great Chelsea teams,” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

“[Petr] Cech, John Terry, [Claude] Makelele, Frank, [Didier] Drogba. The whole spine of the team was flawless, leaders.
“I would have signed all those players [Chelsea have signed] if I was sporting director, really good young players, but I’m not sure who the leader of the team is.

“[N’Golo] Kante’s a great player but he’s so quiet. [Mateo] Kovacic, I know he’s quite quiet, so all of a sudden who is the leader in the backline?

“As much as I like everything he’s done – you only really know teams when they’re struggling and you need leaders then.”
Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
And former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison believes the arrival of a top goalkeeper will make Lampard’s side Premier League title contenders this season.
“Personally, I think they should be challenging with the signings that they’ve made,” Morrison told talkSPORT.
“I do believe if they get a goalkeeper, they will massively be challenging.
“I think that’s where they’re struggling at the moment. That’s not me having a go at Kepa, I just feel when you want to win titles, your goalkeeper has to be excellent.
“You look at Liverpool, Alisson – outstanding. When Man City won it, Ederson – outstanding. So your backline has to be really strong.”
