Chelsea boss Frank Lampard fired sack warning after summer spending spree

Frank Lampard has been handed a stark warning about his future as Chelsea manager – ‘Your legendary status won’t save you from the sack’.

Lampard is gearing up for his second season with Chelsea after a fourth-place finish in the league and runners-up in the FA Cup.

In an effort to reclaim the Premier League, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich sanctioned the signing of £200million worth of talent.

Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr have all arrived at the club and Lampard will be expected to challenge for every competition.

As a player, Lampard won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the Champions League and Europa League but former striker Tony Cascarino says the 42-year-old will be sacked if Chelsea fail to deliver.

“Frank will be totally aware of the pressure that comes with every Chelsea manager,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“If you become a Chelsea manager you know you’re probably the first manager that’s going to get sacked.

“Watford fans might tell you different but generally Chelsea sack managers that have done far more [in terms of] winning.”

Asked if Lampard will get ‘wriggle room’ because he is club legend, Cascarino replied: “No. Not now. The wriggle room is gone.

“Look at the CV of the owner and how he has run that football club and how successful it’s been. You are not going to get away with it.

“It is going to count for nothing being an ex-Chelsea player and grooming the youngsters to become better players.

“He will be tested and if Chelsea don’t defend better than they did last year they are not going to challenge.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu has joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season.

Last season he went a year at RB Leipzig but made just seven appearances.

Chelsea and Lampard have high hopes for the Wales international and will be keeping a close eye on his development at Bramall Lane.

United boss Chris Wilder said: “Ethan is an outstanding young player for Chelsea, and we’ve worked really hard to get his signature for the season.

“We need to thank Frank Lampard and the people at Chelsea for helping making this happen. We’ve got a good relationship with them and they know we’re going to take good care of him.

“It’s an important season for Ethan and playing in the Premier League for us is a good move for everyone.

“He brings a lot of qualities to the group and he’s someone we’ve tracked for two or three seasons.”
