Chelsea being relegated ‘more likely than Tottenham winning the Premier League’

Boehly's Chelsea revolution continues after £65m purchase for new stadium

Chelsea have a stronger chance of being relegated than Tottenham have of winning the Premier League, according to revealing new data from Opta. The big-spending Blues have endured a horror start to the season, compounding the woes of co-owner Todd Boehly.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side staggered to a goalless draw against Bournemouth on Saturday. Just one top-flight win from their first four games leaves Chelsea 14th after a worrying start to the campaign.

Over £1billion has been spent on a glitzy new squad at Stamford Bridge but the money has so far seemed to have been wasted on a bunch of expensive flops. Chelsea’s attack somehow failed to score against the Cherries despite creating several excellent opportunities.

The Boehly-led era in west London seems to be going from bad to worse. Just 25 points have been accumulated by the Blues in 2023 – a measly return given the quality in their squad.

Chelsea are realistically far from relegation this season and while their form has been woeful, there remain teams who have endured far worse periods. But numbers from Opta show that Chelsea being relegated still has a higher chance of happening than London rivals Spurs winning the title.

According to the renowned analytics company, Chelsea have a 1.1 per cent chance of finishing the season in 18th. That would be enough to seal relegation to the Championship.

But in-form Spurs, who look ready to challenge the Premier League title favourites, have just a 0.1 per cent chance of lifting the Premier League trophy come May. That is despite Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoying an unbeaten start to the season. That is partly due to the strength of reigning champions Manchester City who are the overwhelming favourites to win the top prize again this term.

The stat puts Chelsea’s woes into context, with them likelier to face a shock relegation that Spurs are to win the Premier League. However, the data has Chelsea most likely to finish 12th with a 15.5 per cent chance. That would still be a major disappointment given their spending and the optimism that came with Pochettino’s appointment.

Pochettino has attempted to ease the pressure on his players, who were booed by travelling supporters after their draw with Bournemouth.

Asked why sections of the Chelsea support turned toxic, the Argentine said: “Because of expectation, no? I think the fans know if you invest the type of money people create in the media, okay, it is true, but this is an expectation.

“If you don’t win it is normal that the fans are not happy. But what i can tell the fans is the circumstance, that we cannot change, the reality we cannot change. We have too many players (out), of course we are a team that will be strong if we are all together.

“Even Manchester City, Arsenal, all the teams, with normal circumstances with all the squad fit of course can compete for everything. Why is it different for us? Why? It is because of what?”
