Chelsea and Aston Villa fans furious as ref ‘plays one of three added minutes’

Chelsea and Aston Villa fans were left raging at referee Jarred Gillett who bizarrely failed to play the allotted minimum added time at the end of the first-half.

It’s not very often that two sets of fans in the stadium are left collectively furious at the referee, but that was the case at half-time during Chelsea’s home game against Villa. Gillett signalled a minimum of three minutes of added time in an opening 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge that wasn’t short of drama.

Chelsea thought they’d taken the lead when Axel Disasi headed home from Raheem Sterling’s cross, but the linesman’s flag was quickly and correctly raised. And both sets of frustrated fans hit out at the referee on social media for his poor timekeeping.

One Villa fan on Twitter said: “The ref should be changed at half time. Aside from his insanely bad performance, letting Chelsea foul at will, booking Digne, who had blood pouring down his face. He blew for HT before 2 mins added time when there should be 3 minimum. He's clearly flustered & not capable.”

While a perplexed Blues fan tweeted: “What makes that early whistle even funnier is the PGMOL making a BIG DEAL about their new added time gimmick being important and enforced. Didn’t even last two months.”

A second added: “Do the rules just get thrown in the bin when Chelsea games get played? Villa players constantly surrounding the referee & now blows up the whistle 65 seconds early of his own added time.”

Frustration with referee Gillett then grew amongst Chelsea fans after the referee sent Malo Gusto off for a high challenge on Lucas Digne. Gillett originally showed a yellow card to the French defender but following a VAR check the punishment was upgraded to red.

The Blues' miserable start to the season was then compounded after Ollie Watkins fired through the legs of Robert Sanchez from a tight angle to put the visitors in front, one that Sanchez certainly won’t want to see again.

Added time at the end of the second half was vastly different than Gillett’s first-half clanger, with 11 minutes of injury time added on but the Blues were unable to find an equaliser and remain goalless and winless in their last three league games.
