Bruno Guimaraes elbows Arsenal ace in the head before Declan Rice bust-up
Bruno Guimaraes was a ‘lucky boy’ to avoid a red card for his elbow on Jorginho in a feisty first half between Newcastle and Arsenal, according to Gary Neville. Arsenal and Newcastle were embroiled in a close match at St James’ Park with tempers soon flaring when Kai Havertz flew into a dangerous tackle midway through the opening 45 minutes.
The Arsenal forward lunged into a challenge on Sean Longstaff with the referee only brandishing a yellow card, much to the anger of Newcastle players and the home crowd. Newcastle’s protests led to Anthony Gordon, Longstaff and Fabian Schar all being booked to raise the tension even further.
Guimaraes was also running hot from the incident it seemed as he appeared to overstep the mark in a challenge on Jorginho just before half-time. The Newcastle midfielder was chasing down Jorginho with replays seemingly to show Guimaraes stick out an arm on Jorginho’s head.
VAR had a look at the incident but decided against taking any further action with Neville unconvinced.
“That’s not good. He’s got away with it. VAR had a long, long look at it,” he said. “I think he’s having a lucky boy. I’m not having that.”
But Guimaraes’ rampage continued seconds later as he smashed a ball at Havertz before getting into a confrontation with Declan Rice. Referee Stuart Atwell had to intervene to pull the two midfielders apart, but Guimaraes once again avoided a yellow card.

It was Guimaraes’ risky forearm on Jorginho’s head that was the main talking point at half-time on Sky Sports, but Jamie Carragher didn’t feel it was worthy of a red card.
“It’s a forearm on the back of the head,” he said.
“For me, if the referee sees that it’s a yellow card.
“I don’t think that’s a red card for me.”
