Bruno Fernandes names Man Utd star squad are ‘all happy for’ despite poor form

Onana enduring sluggish start to Manchester United career

Manchester United stars are all ‘happy’ for winger Facundo Pellistri despite their fourth defeat in five matches, captain Bruno Fernandes insists. Pellistri was given a rare start in United’s 4-3 Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The absence of Antony and Jadon Sancho has opened a starting berth for Pellistri. The 21-year-old began a game for the first time this season and played 80 minutes in the reverse, replaced late on by Alejandro Garnacho.

Pellistri has been starved of game time under Erik ten Hag, making only 14 appearances for the Dutchman. An array of attacking signings has seen the Uruguay international fall down the pecking order.

But Pellistri impressed his colleagues with his display against Bayern, which saw him come up against a tricky test in left-back Alphonso Davies. Fernandes said the former Penarol star deserved his opportunity due to his training performances and conduct.

“Pellistri is one of the players that deserves his chances. He deserves a lot of credit for everything he’s been through and everything he has done for the team,” Fernandes said.

“He’s always available, he’s someone that’s always training hard, he’s someone that deserves his chances and he did well.

“He did the job that the manager asked him to do and we are all happy for him because he really deserves to get his chances.”

Playmaker Fernandes saw enough from his team-mates to believe United can turn around a dismal run of form. The Red Devils play Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday, and Fernandes insists there is ‘fighting spirit’.

“The positive is that the spirit, the fighting spirit, was there. We tried,” the 29-year-old reflected.

“It wasn’t still enough to win the game or to get something from the game. But at periods, the team showed great spirit. But we have to do it more often and for 90 minutes.”
