On the seventh day Jude Bellingham rested, and on the eight he was back at it, scoring and assisting as Real Madrid moved back to the top by beating Girona 3-0.
The England midfielder sat on the bench for Real Madrid’s seventh game of the season in midweek and played no part in the win over Las Palmas.
But he was on from the start against high-flying Girona and with a sensational assist in the first half and a goal in the second period he sent Madrid back to the summit.
Madrid’s win was marred by the late sending off of Nacho for horrendous foul on Girona subsitute Portu. He launched himself wild and late and before Portu was carted off with his hands over his face, Nacho was shown a straight red.
In the first half Madrid gifted Girona the first 10 minutes of the game and two chances to score – they fluffed them both and they were made to pay when the visitors took their first two with ruthless efficiency.
Girona’s first opportunity was a Yangel Herrera header that went just over the bar. The second was from Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov but his shot came back off the post. Madrid were stirring now and soon they were two up.

The first came on 17 minutes and it was Bellingham with an assist straight from the Luka Modric playbook. He promised to learn from the midfield master when he arrived and with the outside of his right foot he curled the ball behind Girona’s defensive line invitingly for Joselu to sweep it home.
Just four minutes later the advantage was doubled when Toni Kroos took a free-kick from the left and Daley Blind allowed Aurelien Tchouameni to wander away from him. The French midfielder powered his header past Paulo Gazzaniga.
Bellingham could have made it three before the break but Girona’s keeper won a one on one duel.
He did score in the second period and from a move he started. He moved the ball to Tchouameni and pointed towards Kroos telling the French midfielder where to play the ball. Gazzaniga saved Kroos’ shot but when it came out to Joselu he laid it off and with a volley into the ground that bounced past the Girona keeper Bellingham ended the game as a contest.
Then came Nacho’s moment of madness with Girona’s Uruguayan striker Cristhian Stuani needing to be held back by Antonoi Rudiger as he went after Nacho as the Madrid player left the pitch.
Three-nil is a big margin away from home and this was a big statement from Madrid after they lost the Madrid derby last weekend. They were up against the pacesetters in the league and they brushed them aside with ease. Ancelotti had also been able to give Vinicius 70 minutes. He is still some way off his best but will be ready for Napoli on Tuesday in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. As will Bellingham who now has seven goals in eight games in all competitions.
