Arsenal’s Torreira set to join Torino after agreement in principle collapses

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is set to leave the Emirates on loan this summer and Daily Star Sport understands that Torino are in advanced talks to sign the 24-year-old.

The Gunners had agreed a deal in principle with Fiorentina but the move has stalled and Torino are now in advanced talks.

Fiorentina had been close to sealing a £7m loan deal for the Uruguayan, with a £14m obligation to buy next summer, but the Serie A side have cooled their interest allowing Torino to swoop in.

Torreira joined Arsenal for £26m from Sampdoria back in 2018 and he has three years remaining on his current deal.

However, Torreira struggled for game time post-lockdown, making just two starts and is yet make the match day squad this season.

Arsenal have already made a number of signings this summer, making Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares' loan deals permanent, picking up Willian on a free, spending over £22m on Gabriel Magalhaes and resigning Dani Ceballos on loan.

Mikel Arteta is still chasing more additions, namely Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar, and will need to let players go to free up the necessary funds.

Torreira is one of those who will be allowed to leave, after the club terminated Henrikh Mkhitaryan's contract to allow him to join AS Roma.

Defender Rob Holding has been linked with a £5m loan switch to West Ham, while Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed his interest in bringing Sokratis Papastatopoulos to the Stadio San Paolo.

"We're working on it," he told Radio Kiss Kiss.
