Emiliano Martinez could leave Arsenal for Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
The 28-year-old played a key role for Mikel Arteta following Bernd Leno’s serious ligament injury last season, having grown tired of playing a supporting role at the Emirates.
The former Argentina youth international conceded only 24 goals across his 23 appearances in 2019/20, keeping nine clean sheets as Arsenal went on to beat Chelsea in the final of the FA Cup.
Those performances gave Martinez the confidence to request some assurances from Arteta surrounding his place in the team following the return to fitness of Leno, but it is reported that he didn’t get the response he wanted.
The Independent have reported that Martinez, who has left Arsenal on loan six times since joining from Independiente in 2010, has agreed personal terms with Villa over a four-year contract.
They add that Martinez is keen to remain in the Premier League despite interest from Villarreal, and that it might not be with Arsenal with Leno set to start in their opener against Fulham.
The new contract is said to be worth £60,000-per-week, which comes after the Gunners offered improved terms of their own to their back-up stopper.
The Gunners value Martinez at £20m following his lengthy spell in north London, and that could help fund some incoming deals before the transfer window shuts in October.
In an interview with talkSPORT after his impressive performance in the FA Cup final, Martinez said: “I was just crying for the first 5-10 minutes… but now I’m relaxed I might get a replica!
“I can’t explain. I came a long, long way. My family have always supported me along the way.
“My wife and my boy, I’ve now got a family in Europe. I do it for them. I never do it for myself.
“My family are in lockdown so my brother was watching in one house, my dad was watching with my mum.

“It’s tough for them because they wanted to be here and it’s tough for me because after a long, long time I wanted to see them here and give them a hug after a long, long fight. I always do it for them.”
Arteta had previously said of his player: "Well, in terms of Emi’s character and his goalkeeping ability, I didn’t have any question marks.
"The way he trains every day, behaves and has been behaving since he’s been at the club is phenomenal.
"He was a question mark over how he was going to do because he didn’t have any Premier League experience and how he can deal with that game after game, and he’s shown that he’s more than ready to do it.”
