Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi ‘to return to club’ as Hertha Berlin make transfer decision

Arsenal: Arteta praises Smith-Rowe impact

Hertha Berlin have decided they will not be signing Matteo Guendouzi from Arsenal because he is deemed too expensive, according to reports in Germany. The Frenchman has impressed in the Bundesliga this season after arriving from north London in the summer on a temporary deal until the end of the campaign.

Mikel Arteta decided that Guendouzi may benefit from some time away from the club following a host of disciplinary issues last term.

The Arsenal boss is said to have clashed with Guendouzi during a mid-season training camp in Dubai in February 2019.

That was soon forgotten and Guendouzi forced his way back into favour at the Emirates Stadium.

The curly-haired midfielder then clashed with Brighton’s Neal Maupay after Project Restart, during a fiery encounter with Brighton.

Guendouzi was alleged to have mocked Maupay’s salary before the Seagulls striker bagged an injury-time winner.

The pair then clashed at full-time to the fury of Arteta, who made Guendouzi train away from the first-team for the rest of the season.

He has impressed in Germany while away with Hertha, who in an ideal world would like to make the move permanent.

However, according to Bild, the Bundesliga club have already decided that they will not be signing Guendouzi because he is out of their price range.

Arsenal would be looking for around £29million for his services come the end of the season.

It would see the Gunners make significant profit on the £7m they paid to Lorient in the summer of 2018 to sign him.

Even though Hertha have already decided against a permanent move, Arsenal will not be recalling him this month.

Guendouzi recently conceded that his decline at Arsenal was difficult to stomach after being a regular in the starting XI.

He said on his loan move to Hertha: “I needed to have fun on the pitch, to regain confidence and that’s what Hertha offers me. It really is a choice I made.

“In the space of two seasons I have played more than 80 games with Arsenal.

“When you play less, you start to think and it hurts.”

The France under-21 international has scored twice in 10 Bundesliga outings and played the full 90 minutes in yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld.
