Arsenal should move for Diego Costa in January even after win over Brighton

Arsenal’s performance against Brighton showed that Mikel Arteta should make a January move for former Chelsea star Diego Costa.

Costa agreed to terminate his lucrative Atletico Madrid contract on Tuesday and will be a free agent for next month’s transfer window.

He’s bound to have plenty of offers, though the Gunners should do all they can to ensure they are at the front of the queue.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has struggled for goals this season and barely had a sniff during the win over Brighton.

He was denied early in the second half by Robert Sanchez as Arsenal put the pressure on after the break.

But Aubameyang’s form is a worry, and Arteta should be focusing on improving his attacking options next month.

Alexandre Lacazette is Arsenal’s top scorer and netted soon after coming on against Brighton, though has too often blown hot and cold.

Costa knows how to impress in the Premier League having netted 52 goals in the league across three seasons for Chelsea.

His physicality is something the Gunners are lacking this season, and that focal point up top would be beneficial.

Signing Costa would also allow Aubameyang to slot back into his seemingly favoured left-sided position.

The threat of the two would pose plenty of problems to opposition defences with the link-up play potentially very dangerous.

At 32, Costa still has a lot to offer and already knows his way around London following his time with Chelsea.

A move to the Emirates would see him join up with former Blues team-mates David Luiz and Willian while bringing some much needed Premier League title-winning experience to north London.

Wages could be a problem for any potential move, though it’s one that Edu and Arteta should look to work past.

A move for Costa could just save Arsenal’s season and Arteta’s job.
