Arsenal playing with fire as Edu ‘braced for offer’ after Thomas Partey blow

Erik ten Hag previews Arsenal v Man Utd clash

Arsenal would be taking a massive risk by selling another midfielder in the coming days, with reports suggesting that an exit could be on the cards despite the English transfer window having closed on Friday. The Gunners were among the Premier League’s busiest clubs over the summer, with over £200million being spent on new players such as Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber.

Arsenal have also waved goodbye to several first-team stars, including the likes of Folarin Balogun, Rob Holding, Granit Xhaka and Matt Turner. Another departure could reportedly take place over the next few days, though, with Jorginho said to have emerged as a target for Fenerbahce.

Turkish clubs will be able to sign players until their transfer window closes later this month, with Ajansspor reporting that a bid could soon arrive for Jorginho. However, such a move would be a huge risk for Arsenal given the current midfield situation at the Emirates Stadium.

Jorginho may be required to play an important role between now and January due to Thomas Partey’s injury, which could keep him sidelined for up to three months. The latter has established himself as a key cog in the machine at Arsenal and will be sorely missed for the duration of his recovery period.

Arsenal will need to cope with Partey’s absence until he is ready to play again, which could see Jorginho bumped up the pecking order in midfield. Mikel Arteta would, therefore, be playing with fire by selling the Italian maestro as it would risk leaving the Gunners short of quality in the engine room.

It will be crucial for Arsenal to win midfield battles on a weekly basis in order to challenge Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table once again. Jorginho’s range of passing will help them to do just that without Partey in the side and selling him would threaten Arsenal’s ability to keep things ticking against the stronger teams in the division.

It remains to be seen whether Arteta would even be prepared to consider any offers for Jorginho, who has only been on Arsenal’s books since joining from Chelsea in January. He recently waxed lyrical over the midfielder’s qualities, which the Spaniard believes will help his team-mates to flourish over the course of the campaign.

“Jorgi is a phenomenal character, he has so much experience, everybody respects and loves him, and he is a very particular character as well,” said Arteta last month.

“He has been really, really, really good for us. He needs to maintain what he is doing but as well we have to promote experience from other areas. There are very young players as well and now they have been with us for a while and they have to start to move forwards and take initiative and go another step further, because that is going to be needed for sure.

“It’s something that has to be shared. Jorgi’s experience is very important and then we have to use that and allow them to lead and self-police in certain moments. When it comes from the dressing room, that’s the most powerful thing.”
