Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta makes ‘not a good sign’ admission on Rice injury

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has offered an update on the status of Declan Rice after he was subbed off during the north London derby on Sunday.

Arteta revealed after the game that Rice was taken off due to feeling "some discomfort in his back". But the Spaniard added he was hopeful his time away from the pitch wouldn't be too long.

However, Arteta didn't sound as confident when speaking ahead of Arsenal's Carabao Cup clash with Brentford. He said: "He hasn’t trained yet.

"Obviously he could not carry on in the game, he wasn’t comfortable at all. Hopefully it’s not something big. We are confident.

"He’s still uncomfortable, obviously he had to leave the pitch and that’s never a good sign for a player like him, but hopefully he will progress in the next few days. It’s a tough one."

Arteta will be hoping Rice will be back to full fitness ahead of their huge Premier League clash with Manchester City on 8th October. However, it's not just Rice that has injury woes at the Emirates.

And Arteta confirmed Bukayo Saka will miss their next Premier League match after he limped off against Tottenham. He added: "He was limping quite badly after the match.

"We had to get him off the field. He hasn’t been able to participate in the session. It’s a possibility [he could miss Bournemouth]."
