Andy Gray gives United stars a brutal dressing down after Arsenal loss

Andy Gray gives Man United stars a brutal dressing down after last-gasp Arsenal defeat as he slams ‘hot and cold’ Marcus Rashford, ‘waste of time’ Anthony Martial – and insists Bruno Fernandes CANNOT be captain

  • Arsenal beat Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday after two dramatic late goals
  • The result means United have picked up just six points from four games so far
  • Andy Gray hit out at several of their players and insisted the club is in big trouble

Andy Gray has lambasted Manchester United’s players after their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

United battled hard at the Emirates and took the lead through Marcus Rashford midway through the first half, before they were immediately pegged back by Martin Odegaard.

Alejandro Garnacho thought he had won the game in the closing stages, but he was adjudged to be offside by VAR and then Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus scored injury time goals to secure a dramatic last-gasp victory for the Gunners.

Erik ten Hag’s side now have just six points from their first four games, while they were also unconvincing during wins over both Wolves and Nottingham Forest in what has been a difficult start to the season.

And Gray, speaking on beIN SPORTS, launched a brutal tirade against several individual players and the team as a whole following some uninspiring performances.

Two dramatic last-gasp goals from Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus condemned United to defeat

Gray hit out at several stars, including Marcus Rashford, who he labelled as too inconsistent

‘I said it at the end of the season,’ he said. ‘This team doesn’t frighten me. Does it frighten you?

‘I look at Rashford. He’s hot and cold, we don’t know what we’re getting from Marcus. Martial? No. Waste of time. Antony. Sorry!

‘Fernandes as skipper? No. Christian Eriksen – (what a) wonderful footballer he has been, but has he still got it at this level to do it?

‘Casemiro? Way off the mark. So I’m looking here at who’s injured and who’s not playing that would get in the team? Not many.

‘At left back they’ve got a problem with Luke Shaw (and his injury) but is that going to win you a league or a European trophy? No it’s not.’

Much was expected of United after a promising campaign in 2022-23 that saw them come third, while they also won the Carabao Cup.

They spent heavily over the summer to strengthen the spine of the team, with the additions of Andre Onana, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and deadline day arrival Sofyan Amrabat costing almost £200m.

However, for Gray, these signings alone won’t be enough to solve the problems they face.

He added: ‘There’s such a lot of pressure being lumped on Rasmus Hojlund and Amrabat’s shoulders.

‘Sorry, Amrabat is not going to make this team league winners or anything like it.

Gray also insisted that Bruno Fernandes is not an appropriate skipper for a club like United

Gray claimed Anthony Martial (left) is a ‘waste of time’ and Antony (right) is not good enough

The pundit highlighted that Erik ten Hag has much work to do to get his side back on track

‘Hojlund, will he get the goals? I don’t know. He’s untried at this level in this league which I think is the most unforgiving league in football.

‘We’ve seen many a front man come over and fail from leagues that maybe haven’t been good enough.

‘Others have come and been huge successes but there’s pressure on this kid because he’s at Man United and he needs to hit the ground running and he’s not going to get time to settle in.

‘And Ten Hag must know that. This is his team, these are his players. He’s been here since last June and this is his second season. His players should be in tune with what he wants them to do.’
