Alan Shearer proven spot on about Kylian Mbappe after sticking his neck out

Kieran Trippier aims to ruin PSG star Kylian Mbappe’s Newcastle trip even if son is upset

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer confidently predicted that Kylian Mbappe would be marked “out of the game” by Kieran Trippier before the French star had a dismal evening at St James’ Park. The Magpies triumphed 4-1 over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening in their first home Champions League match for nearly 20 years.

Goals came from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar while Lucas Hernandez got the sole PSG goal in the second half. But the visitors were rarely able to get their talisman Mbappe on the ball in advantageous positions, with Luis Enrique’s side struggling against the famed Newcastle press.

Mbappe’s fellow forwards Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani were unable to hold onto the ball long enough to sustain possession in the Newcastle half, while the Ligue 1 champions’ buildup was constantly picked apart by Eddie Howe’s outfit on a historic night for the side.

Mbappe looked visibly frustrated at his team’s inability to supply him with opportunities, as he cut a forlorn figure in the middle of the pitch amid Newcastle’s celebrations. Trippier and the rest of the backline did a stellar job in keeping the 24-year-old quiet, though Shearer was among those who expected a difficult evening for the France star.

Speaking to The Rest is Football podcast prior to the game, Shearer said: “Yeah, there’s something happening, an important team, player, game coming to St. James’ Park, Champions League, PSG and Mbappe. “Trippier will mark him out of the game!”

Before the game, Trippier insisted that he was “ready” for the challenge that Mbappe would provide, though often it was Kolo Muani who lined up on that flank while Mbappe joined Ramos as part of a central two up front.

“For me personally it’s a challenge that I’m ready for,” Trippier said prior to kick-off. “I’ve played against many good players and many good wingers in my career. This game is going to be no different. The Champions League is where I want to play, and you play against the best wingers in the world.”

Not only did Trippier live up to Shearer’s expectations and ‘pocket’ Mbappe but his son also came away with the striker’s shirt. After the England defender admitted in his pre-match press conference that his son wanted to walk out with Mbappe as opposed to his own father, such is the extent that he is idolised, Mbappe then gave his shirt to Trippier’s son after the match.

Trippier’s son Jacob could be seen parading Mbappe’s shirt around St James’ Park after the match, despite the PSG star initially promising to give it away to Longstaff who had plans to hand it to his little brother.
