5 times Man Utd were knocked out in Champions League group & what happened next

Even if Manchester United secure a much-needed victory over Galatasaray tonight, their Champions League hopes remain firmly in the balance.

Having lost three of their four games to Bayern Munich, the Turkish champions and Copenhagen, it’s a minor miracle that Erik ten Hag’s side still have a good chance of reaching the knockout stage. With United just a point behind Galatasaray and the Danes, two wins should be enough to put them through to the last 16.

Crashing out of a favourable-looking group would be a major embarrassment for United. They could even miss out on third and a place in the Europa League. However, it wouldn’t be the first time. Here’s what happened on previous occasions United didn’t get through their Champions League group

1994/95

The 1990s was an era of almost total domination for United – but the 1994/95 was one to forget. They were pipped to the Premier League title on the final day by Blackburn and lost the FA Cup final to Everton.

The Reds also flopped in Europe, finishing third in their group behind surprise group winners Gothenburg and Barcelona. A final-night 4-0 thumping of Galatasaray wasn’t enough to send them through.

2005/06

Another season where United missed out on the Premier League title and failed in the Champions League, with Chelsea taking the domestic crown with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side second.

United were surprisingly woeful in Europe having been handed a kind-looking group containing Villarreal, Benfica, and Lille. United, who did win the League Cup that season, finished bottom of the group with just one win and four points.

2011/12

Ferguson’s penultimate season at the helm will best be remembered for Sergio Aguero snatching the title from United’s grasp in the most dramatic finale in Premier League history.

In the Champions League, the Reds Devils were given another straightforward-looking group, only to fail to make it through. Three draws were their undoing as they finished third behind Benfica and Basel.

2015/16

The barren post-Ferguson years were in full swing as United finished fifth in the Premier League under Louis van Gaal. They also finished outside the top two in their Champions League group behind Wolfsburg and PSV Eindhoven.

United did have the safety net of the Europa League, only to lose to Liverpool in the last 16. They did at least end the season on a high by winning the FA Cup.

2020/21

This was a nearly season United on several fronts. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they finished runners-up in the Premier League, albeit 12 points back from Manchester City, and went out of the FA Cup and League Cup in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

In the Champions League, United plucked disaster from the jaws of progression after topping their section for most of the group phase, winning three of their first four games. However, back-to-back defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig condemned them to the Europa League. United advanced all the way to the final of the second-tier competition, only to lose on penalties to Villarreal following a 1-1 draw.
