AFL list managers are edging closer to finalising their squads ahead of the draft, which starts on November 20.

Every club except for North Melbourne and Gold Coast can sign a maximum of 44 footballers for next season, comprising between 36 and 38 on the primary list, four to six category A rookies – depending on the size of their primary list – and up to two category B rookies.

The Kangaroos will have two extra list spots again thanks to their league assistance package, while the Suns are still benefiting from similar help; they can sign nine players on their rookie list.

AFL rules state clubs must use at least three draft picks each year, a tally that includes rookie upgrades. Below is your team’s list state of play.

Adelaide

Arrivals: Chris Burgess (traded – Gold Coast)
Departures: James Borlase (delisted), Tyler Brown (delisted), Tom Doedee (free agency – Brisbane Lions), Jackson Hately (delisted), Shane McAdam (traded – Melbourne), Fischer McAsey (retired), Andrew McPherson (delisted), Tariek Newchurch (delisted), Paul Seedsman (retired)
Contracted: 38 (no category B rookies)
Draft picks: 10, 14, 20, 89
The Crows delisted Borlase after unsuccessfully applying for him to spend a fourth season as a category B rookie, but they committed to redrafting him as a rookie, while Nick Murray earned a promotion to the primary list. They are planning to make two or three picks at the national draft, depending on whether they can package selections to move up.

Brisbane Lions

Arrivals: Tom Doedee (free agency – Adelaide), Brandon Ryan (traded – Hawthorn)
Departures: Marcus Adams (retired), Nakia Cockatoo (retired), Blake Coleman (delisted), Tom Fullarton (traded – Melbourne), Jack Gunston (traded – Hawthorn), Rhys Mathieson (delisted), Darryl McDowell-White jnr (delisted), Daniel Rich (retired)
Contracted: 39 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 30, 39, 51, 54, 67, 97
The Lions have 33 primary-listed players, so need to add a minimum of three more, including upgrading Carter Michael from the rookie list. They are unlikely to make a pick swap splash in this year’s draft, particularly given they already traded their future second-round selection in the deal that got Brandon Ryan to the club and Jack Gunston out the door.

Carlton

Arrivals: Orazio Fantasia (delisted free agency – Port Adelaide), Elijah Hollands (traded – Gold Coast)
Departures: Ed Curnow (retired), Paddy Dow (traded – St Kilda), Zac Fisher (traded – North Melbourne), Josh Honey (delisted), Lochie O’Brien (delisted), Sam Philp (delisted), Lachie Plowman (retired)
Contracted: 40 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 22, 28, 70, 78, 96
The Blues will place ex-Power and Bombers recruit Fantasia on their main list, as well as promoting Matt Cottrell from the rookie list. They will use only their first two picks at the national draft, which will take them to the minimum of 36 players on the primary list.

Collingwood

Arrivals: Lachie Schultz (traded – Fremantle)
Departures: Taylor Adams (traded – Sydney), Trent Bianco (delisted), Arlo Draper (delisted), Jack Ginnivan (traded – Hawthorn), Will Kelly (delisted), Cooper Murley (delisted), Trey Ruscoe (delisted), Tom Wilson (delisted)
Contracted: 37 (no category B rookies)
Draft picks: 19, 33, 80, 98
The Magpies are set to make only two picks at the national draft, after promoting Ash Johnson and Oleg Markov to the primary list, but could add another player via the pre-season supplemental selection period. Kelly is one option for that after being delisted. International scholarship player Bassirou Faye, who was not officially part of Collingwood’s list, will not be at the club next season.

Essendon

Arrivals: Todd Goldstein (free agency – North Melbourne), Ben McKay (free agency – North Melbourne), Jade Gresham (free agency – St Kilda), Xavier Duursma (traded – Port Adelaide)
Departures: Alastair Lord (delisted), Cian McBride (delisted), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (retired), Massimo D’Ambrosio (traded – Hawthorn), Rhett Montgomerie (delisted), Anthony Munkara (delisted), Andrew Phillips (retired), Will Snelling (delisted), James Stewart (delisted), Patrick Voss (delisted), Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (traded – Port Adelaide)
Contracted: 38 (no category B rookies)
Draft picks: 9, 31, 35, 61, 88
The Bombers have endured a hectic off-season, bringing in four players, offloading two more, and delisting contracted swingman Stewart, among others. They have a decent draft hand but are keen to move up the order, which they have until November 10 to do, or again during the draft.

Fremantle

Arrivals: Oscar McDonald (delisted free agency – Williamstown)
Departures: Eric Benning (delisted), Travis Colyer (delisted), Joel Hamling (free agency – Sydney), Liam Henry (traded – St Kilda), Lachie Schultz (traded – Collingwood), Nathan Wilson (delisted)
Contracted: 39 (including two category B rookies)
Draft picks: 34, 46, 60, 64, 85
Bailey Banfield and Josh Treacy will be upgraded to the Dockers’ primary list, while they are set to make three selections at the national draft. They hope Next Generation Academy ruck prospect Mitch Edwards, once a top-10 chance, slides beyond the first 40 picks to give them the ability to match any opposition bid.

Geelong

Arrivals: None
Departures: Jon Ceglar (retired), Flynn Kroeger (delisted), Sam Menegola (delisted), Esava Ratugolea (traded – Port Adelaide), Osca Riccardi (delisted), Sam Simpson (delisted), Isaac Smith (retired), Cooper Whyte (delisted)
Contracted: 38 (including two category B rookies)
Draft picks: 8, 25, 76, 87, 94
The Cats could make as many as five selections in the national draft to reach 36 players on the primary list, but may fill a spot with a rookie upgrade. Ted Clohesy will become a category A rookie next season, to accommodate new category B rookie Joe Furphy. There is a big discrepancy between their second and third picks as they stand, and clubs have inquired about their No.8 selection.

Gold Coast

Arrivals: None
Departures: Jed Anderson (delisted), Connor Blakely (retired), Chris Burgess (traded – Adelaide), Mabior Chol (traded – Hawthorn), Charlie Constable (retired), Elijah Hollands (traded – Carlton), Brodie McLaughlin (delisted), Jeremy Sharp (delisted), Jake Stein (delisted)
Contracted: 38 (no category B rookies)
Uncontracted: Sam Day
Draft picks: 24, 26, 27, 32, 36, 38, 66, 71, 74, 84
Day will be delisted by the second list lodgement period on Thursday then picked back up in the pre-season draft, while category B rookie Hewago Paul Oea will be promoted to the primary list after the national draft. Gold Coast did a great job accumulating draft picks, or points, to match opposition bids on club academy prospects Jed Walter, Ethan Read, Jake Rogers and Will Graham.

GWS

Arrivals: None
Departures: Phil Davis (retired), Cameron Fleeton (delisted), Matt Flynn (free agency – West Coast), Jason Gillbee (delisted), Adam Kennedy (delisted), Daniel Lloyd (retired)
Contracted: 38 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 7, 16, 43, 59, 77, 79, 95
Contracted veteran Kennedy is not included in the number above after being delisted, but the Giants are committed to picking him up again in the rookie draft as part of six additions to come. They will make a minimum of three selections at the national draft but up to four. The second category B slot will be filled, possibly with one of club academy pair Harvey Thomas or Charlie McCormack.

Hawthorn

Arrivals: Jack Ginnivan (traded – Collingwood), Jack Gunston (traded – Brisbane Lions), Mabior Chol (traded – Gold Coast), Massimo D’Ambrosio (traded – Essendon)
Departures: Lachie Bramble (delisted), Tyler Brockman (traded – West Coast), Fergus Greene (delisted), Emerson Jeka (delisted), Jacob Koschitzke (traded – Richmond), Ned Long (delisted), Max Lynch (retired), Josh Morris (delisted), Fionn O’Hara (delisted), Brandon Ryan (traded – Brisbane Lions)
Contracted: 39 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 4, 44, 47, 49, 62, 63, 83
The Hawks have up to five list vacancies, if they want to sign a second category B rookie. They will make three selections at the national draft, as well as upgrading star midfielder Jai Newcombe – who was shortlisted for All-Australian honours this year – to the primary list.

Melbourne

Arrivals: Tom Fullarton (traded – Brisbane Lions), Shane McAdam (traded – Adelaide), Jack Billings (traded – St Kilda)
Departures: Luke Dunstan (retired), Brodie Grundy (traded – Sydney), James Harmes (traded – Western Bulldogs), Michael Hibberd (retired), James Jordon (free agency – Sydney), Jake Melksham (delisted), Deakyn Smith (delisted), Kye Turner (delisted)
Contracted: 39 (including two category B rookies)
Draft picks: 6, 11, 42, 93
The Demons plan to redraft Melksham as a rookie while he recovers from his late-career ACL rupture. They retained Andy Moniz-Wakefield as a category B rookie, will promote Daniel Turner to the primary list and nominated father-son prospect Kynan Brown, who could sneak through to the rookie draft. Melbourne may get involved in another pick swap, but are likely to use only two national draft selections.

North Melbourne

Arrivals: Zac Fisher (traded – Carlton), Dylan Stephens (traded – Sydney), Bigoa Nyuon (traded – Richmond), Toby Pink (delisted free agency – Glenelg)
Departures: Aiden Bonar (delisted), Ben Cunnington (retired), Jacob Edwards (delisted), Todd Goldstein (free agency – Essendon), Aaron Hall (retired), Daniel Howe (retired), Jack Mahony (delisted), Ben McKay (free agency – Essendon), Flynn Perez (delisted), Phoenix Spicer (delisted), Kayne Turner (delisted), Lachie Young (delisted), Jack Ziebell (retired)
Contracted: 37 (no category B rookies)
Draft picks: 2, 3, 15, 17, 18, 57, 82
The Kangaroos have 32 players on their primary list and five rookies, and plan to use five or six picks in the national draft plus another in the rookie draft. If they end up using only five, they will consider adding a sixth via the pre-season supplemental selection period. The AFL gave North special permission to have two extra list spots for a second straight season as part of their assistance package.

Port Adelaide

Arrivals: Ivan Soldo (traded – Richmond), Jordon Sweet (traded – Western Bulldogs), Esava Ratugolea (traded – Geelong), Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (traded – Essendon)
Departures: Nathan Barkla (delisted), Riley Bonner (delisted), Trent Dumont (delisted), Xavier Duursma (traded – Essendon), Orazio Fantasia (delisted), Sam Hayes (delisted), Tom Jonas (retired), Scott Lycett (retired), Jake Pasini (delisted), Brynn Teakle (delisted)
Contracted: 38 (no category B rookies)
Draft picks: 73
The Power, who have 35 players on the primary list and three rookies, will use two picks in the national draft – and they will be late ones, after another productive trade period. They will upgrade a rookie as well. Pasini’s delisting came despite him being contracted for 2024.

Richmond

Arrivals: Jacob Koschitzke (traded – Hawthorn), Sam Naismith (delisted free agency – Port Melbourne)
Departures: Kaelan Bradtke (delisted), Jason Castagna (delisted), Trent Cotchin (retired), Bigoa Nyuon (traded – North Melbourne), Jack Riewoldt (retired), Ivan Soldo (traded – Port Adelaide), Robbie Tarrant (retired)
Contracted: 41 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 29, 41, 65, 68, 86
Ex-Swan Naismith’s signing leaves the Tigers with a maximum of three list vacancies, if they choose to add a second category B rookie. They will make two selections at the national draft, then upgrade Ben Miller from the rookie list.

St Kilda

Arrivals: Paddy Dow (traded – Carlton), Liam Henry (traded – Fremantle)
Departures: Oscar Adams (delisted), Jack Billings (traded – Melbourne), Jack Bytel (delisted), Nick Coffield (traded – Western Bulldogs), Leo Connolly (delisted), Jade Gresham (free agency – Essendon), Tom Highmore (delisted), Jack Peris (delisted)
Contracted: 37 (including one category B rookie)
Uncontracted: Daniel McKenzie
Draft picks: 13, 21, 40, 92
McKenzie remains in limbo after an injury-ruined season but the resurgent Mason Wood will be promoted to the primary list after a career-best campaign. The Saints have two high picks in this year’s national draft and could make four or more selections.

Sydney

Arrivals: Taylor Adams (traded – Collingwood), Brodie Grundy (traded – Melbourne), James Jordon (free agency – Melbourne), Joel Hamling (free agency – Fremantle)

Contracted: 39 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 12, 45, 55, 91
The Swans, who currently have 34 primary-listed players, will make two or three selections in the national draft – with their first one of most interest – and will upgrade rookie Robbie Fox. They have committed to redrafting Reid as a rookie. Jaiden Magor will remain on the rookie list for next season, as will Lachie McAndrew for a fourth year as a 2021 mid-season draftee.

West Coast

Arrivals: Tyler Brockman (traded – Hawthorn), Matt Flynn (free agency – GWS Giants)

Contracted: 35 (no category B rookies)
Uncontracted: Jordyn Baker, Tyrell Dewar, Zane Trew
Draft picks: 1, 23, 37, 58, 81
Trew and category B rookies Baker and Dewar have not officially re-signed but are likely to be at the club in 2024. There is still intrigue around whether the Eagles will trade the No.1 selection or complete any other potential pick swaps, which could determine how many selections they make in the national draft.

Western Bulldogs

Arrivals: Nick Coffield (traded – St Kilda), James Harmes (traded – Melbourne)
Departures: Josh Bruce (retired), Hayden Crozier (delisted), Taylor Duryea (delisted), Mitch Hannan (delisted), Robbie McComb (delisted), Toby McLean (delisted), Lachie McNeil (delisted), Tim O’Brien (delisted), Cody Raak (delisted), Roarke Smith (delisted), Jordon Sweet (traded – Port Adelaide)

James O’Donnell will continue as a category B rookie after playing 12 senior games in a promising debut season. The Dogs are set to make three or four selections at the national draft, including matching a likely first-round opposition bid on father-son prospect Jordan Croft. The Dogs plan to redraft delisted duo Duryea and McNeil as rookies, and will upgrade Anthony Scott to the primary list.
