Carlton offer Silvagni a two-year deal

Jack Silvagni is likely to remain at Carlton after the Blues offered the out of contract forward/utility a two-year deal.

While negotiations are not complete and Silvagni has not agreed to terms, the club has tabled a two-year deal according to two sources familiar with negotiations who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of contract matters.

One well-placed source said a two-year term was likely to be accepted by Silvagni, who is recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of contention for a spot in Carlton’s side for Friday night’s elimination final against Sydney.

If accepted, as likely, Silvagni will be contracted to remain a Carlton player into a tenth season, having started as a Blue after being drafted under the father-son rule in 2015. He is an unrestricted free agent this year.

Silvagni’s future has been the subject of speculation, in part because the Blues have two star key forwards in Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay and have been willing to use Tom de Koning as second ruck alongside Marc Pittonet.

Silvagni usually plays as a forward or second ruck, but has fallen out of the 22 occasionally due to Carlton’s array of talls. His versatility and football smarts are viewed as his primary assets.

He injured his knee in a VFL game against the Suns that grounded him late in the season and gave him no chance of a return to the seniors for the club’s first final in a decade and the first for most of his teammates.

Silvagni is a third generation Carlton player from one of the club’s most decorated families, as the son of champion full-back Stephen Silvagni and grandson of another club legend in Sergio Silvagni.

His brother Ben was also on the club playing list for two seasons until the end of 2020.
