New F1 camera angle leaves fans blown away as it shows ‘true speed of the cars’
A dramatic new on-board camera has gone down a storm with F1 fans.
Followers of the sport are used to incredible visuals from the car-mounted cameras, including the recent addition of the helmet cam. Another, introduced at the Japanese Grand Prix, has left fans of the sport awestruck.
The camera, mounted to the left of the driver's head, tilts as the car whistles round corners. It looks particularly dramatic at the legendary Suzuka circuit, which is famed for its flowing nature and fast corners.

The camera was on Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes for Friday’s practice sessions. Explaining the innovation, F1 pitlane reporter Will Buxton said: “You notice, always, the camera on the top of the car. But look, that’s the new camera on the side there.
“Obviously they have to work to make these cameras as small as humanly possible to bring it to you. That little camera in there is working on a little gimbal as well so you’re getting that beautiful change of movement.”

Fans were unsurprisingly impressed, with one saying: “Love it, adds to the sense of speed which most cameras simply don't do.” A second added: “The speed it shows is so nice.” A third hailed: “How these cameras stabilise the video will always amaze me.”
A few fans complained about the halo blocking their view though. One commented: “It's good but unfortunately the halo blocks most the view.” A second pleaded: “Camera on the front of the halo is a must for me.”

After seeing his winning streak come to an end in Singapore last weekend, Max Verstappen is hot favourite at Suzuka, a track which suits his Red Bull perfectly. The world champion topped both practice sessions, with the second being curtailed early when Pierre Gasly careered into a barrier, causing significant damage to his Alpine.
"It felt really good," said Verstappen. "From lap one, the car was enjoyable to drive again and it seems like we had a strong day on short runs, long runs. There is a lot of degradation on this track so it will be quite tough on tyres in the race, but so far we have a good start to the weekend.”
