Martin Brundle denies being ‘stoned’ after F1 icon makes ‘happy place’ comment

Martin Brundle was forced to deny that he was ‘stoned’ on Tuesday in a light-hearted exchange with a fan on social media. Brundle has gained a legion of followers thanks to his popularity on Sky Sports, where he interviews drivers and celebrity fans during his pre-race grid walks.

Brundle was absent during the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend but is a regular member of the presenting team on Sky Sports and has conducted his grid walk at most races throughout the season. He took to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday night to discuss his musical tastes as he wrote: “Is there a better track, or indeed lyrics, in history than Led Zep’s Stairway to Heaven?”

While some of his followers chipped in with their own opinions on the classic song, one confused fan accused Brundle of being under the influence. They asked: “Are you stoned, Brundle? This reads like one of the great stoner tweets of all time.”

Brundle, however, was quick to shut down the claims by insisting that he has never indulged in any illegal substances. He replied: “Thank you for asking but no I’m not stoned. Never have been, and not sure I’d know how to be. I am an adrenaline junkie though.

“Actually I think I may have found a happy place on Twitter (X) with so many nice replies and suggestions for other great tracks.”

It came just a few days after Brundle used the platform to reveal that he had been sampling the views of F1 fans during the summer break. He said the vast majority of people he spoke to were backing Lewis Hamilton, who managed to secure a sixth-placed finish at Zandvoort despite starting from 13th on the grid.

He posted: “So I’ve been out and about in the summer break. Met many and all kinds of F1 fans who want to engage which is really great. Always thank them for their passion about our sport and ask them who they support. 95 per cent have said Lewis, so there you have it. Just a Marty poll but fact.”

It remains to be seen whether Brundle will return to Sky Sports at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen will be looking to secure his 10th straight Grand Prix victory. Another win for the Dutchman would break the record he currently shares with Sebastian Vettel, who claimed the spoils at nine successive races during his final year at Red Bull in 2013.
