Lewis Hamilton has made it no secret he dreams of a move to Ferrari – and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has already begun putting contingency plans in place.
Hamilton scooped his sixth Drivers’ Championship at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Brit beat off the challenge of team-mate Valtteri Bottas with two races to spare.
And the 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season so that could be the perfect opportunity to jump ship.
But Wolff is not worried about his star driver’s future.
“It’s natural that drivers always dream of Ferrari, the most important brand in Formula 1,” Wolff told Sky Italia.
“Red is like the sun in Formula 1.”
But does Hamilton feel the need to chase the sun?
Wolff added: “He needs to be with a team and with people who love to work. And his emotions and heart are definitely with Mercedes today.
“We hope to have the two most competitive drivers in Formula 1.
“And he (Hamilton) is our priority today.
“But if he wants to have a look at the market, we have to as well. And there are others that I like.”
In 2017, Hamilton revealed his desire to join Ferrari in 2021.
“It’s definitely a dream for every driver, including me,” Hamilton said at the time.
“Whether or not l will ever be there… I guess definitely not in the next four years or whatever it is – three years.”
