Lando Norris agrees with Fernando Alonso on the ‘worst thing’ of driving in F1

Lando Norris has claimed that the invasion of drivers’ privacy is the worst element of being on the F1 grid in the current era. The rise of social media and the sport’s popularity have turned racers into global celebrities.

As one of the most active drivers on social media, Norris has cultivated an army of young fans who regularly tune in to watch him livestream video games and keep up to date with his life away from the racetrack through his Instagram account.

While some drivers are more private away from the racetrack (Sebastian Vettel had no social media until his Instagram account was created in the summer of 2022), playing into the fame and celebrity that comes with driving in F1 is crucial to building a brand and a fanbase.

Speaking to RaceFans about the downsides of being an F1 driver, Norris said: “I would say that’s the worst thing of it all, just losing privacy. I saw Fernando Alonso did an interview the other day, he was asked what is the worst thing about it, and he said it was privacy.

“Just being able to walk around, not get judged by every single thing that you do in your life or say or a person you meet or whatever.

“There’s always a story because of it. I hate it and as much as I’ve grown up on social media and loved it in many ways. I’ve also learned to hate it in many ways and then to deal with it in many ways. It is just part of Formula 1 – any top sport in the world is a similar thing.”

With the success of Netflix’s docuseries Drive to Survive, fans have become accustomed to getting glimpses into the private lives and inner workings of F1 drivers, but there are some drivers on the grid who are looking to keep their personal lives more private.

Max Verstappen discussed the element of privacy on Bloomberg TV, stating: “Certain things are a bit more private and privacy for me is very important. I like things to be portrayed how they actually are and not with a lot of spice to it.

“I have an interview and explain my side of the story. I know Netflix is trying to attract new fans but it’s important also to really see the reality of the sport.”
