Lewis Hamilton admitted that he was ‘totally at fault’ for colliding with McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri in the Italian Grand Prix.
Hamilton was handed a five-second penalty by the stewards for the entangling of wheels as the pair fought over eighth place on lap 41 of the race at Monza.
The seven-time world champion ran off the track but continued unscathed to finish sixth, but 22-year-old Piastri suffered front-wing damage, stopped for repairs, and dropped out of the points. It was a clumsy error by Hamilton, a kind he has seldom made in his stellar career.
He was hit with two penalty points on his racing licence, to take him to four in the calendar year. A total of 12 triggers a ban.
Piastri complained on his team radio: ‘He just turned across me under braking.’

Hamilton, 38, spoke to the Australian and shook his hand immediately after the race finished, later explaining: ‘It was totally my fault. It wasn’t intentional. I went over and apologised to him straight afterwards.
‘I got up alongside him and just misjudged the gap I had to the right and clipped him. It could happen at any time.
‘I knew shortly afterwards it must have been my fault and I wanted to make sure he knew it wasn’t intentional. That’s what gentlemen do.
