It’s time for the Nick Mullens era in San Francisco.
The 49ers (1-7) announced that Mullens — who went undrafted out of Southern Miss in 2017 — will start at quarterback Thursday in place of C.J. Beathard, who is dealing with a lingering right wrist injury. Beathard will be active and serve as Mullens’ backup.
Mullens has never thrown an NFL pass and has spent most of his career on the 49ers’ practice squad. He will be facing a 1-6 Raiders team that has endured about as many as struggles as its Bay Area rival.
WEEK 9 NFL PICKS: Against the spread | Straight up
The Raiders are winless on the road this season and will be playing their second game since dealing wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cowboys. Quarterback Derek Carr put together a strong performance Sunday vs. the Colts, throwing for 244 yards and three touchdowns, which could be seen as a positive sign.
Sporting News will provide live updates from Raiders-49ers on “Thursday Night Football.”
