Maybe Rockies owner Dick Monfort will make enough money from the All-Star Game to keep shortstop Trevor Story and not whine about the cost.
Kiz: Even if Monfort wanted to break his piggy bank, I’m not certain this story will have a happy ending in Colorado. Free to leave the Rockies when his contract expires at season’s end, why would Story want to continue playing for a team that’s not committed to winning?
Sitting in my local pizza joint, imploring beer guzzlers around me to boycott any business owned by Monfort, I learned I was preaching to the choir. There were 12 baseball fans at the bar. All 12 wanted to see Monfort lose. Seven were Rockies fans bent on doing their part to push Monfort to the poor house. The other five were fans of other major-league teams that find it boring to play the minor-league Rox. Boycotting the players was not the vibe, but not paying Monfort another nickel sure as heck was.
Kiz: Homefield advantage? I’m not certain the majority of spectators will be rooting for the Rockies in even half the games at Coors Field this year.
I loved your column on the All-Star Game moving from Georgia to Denver. What really knocked me over was your understanding of history, exemplified by your point that commissioner Rob Manfred was punishing the Atlanta Braves for the crime of living in a state still fighting the Civil War. I have never written before to a sports columnist, but it seems to me many sports fans rebel at the notion race is a core part of everything we do on a daily basis. You know better than I do that the history of race in sports parallels our racial history overall. The situation is better than in the past, but still not a pretty picture.
Kiz: For any fan with eyes wide open to all that’s good and bad in American society, sports are a mirror, not an escape.
I was always so frustrated watching Paul Millsap miss shot after shot and turn the ball over. He’s a utility player, at best. Getting Aaron Gordon makes Denver a contender not only in the West, but to win it all. Gordon is a baller!
Kirk, Chula Vista, Calif.
Kiz: All it cost the Nuggets to discover Millsap was not the answer was $100 million.
And today’s parting shot is from a gent that insists soccer star Megan Rapinoe is boring, but for some odd reason seems to be obsessed with dissing her.
The only thing worse than writing an uninformative and unentertaining column is writing one that’s boring. But to cover all three bases in one fell swoop? Now that’s an accomplishment. Anyone who describes Rapinoe as “charismatic” displays the lingual finesse of a Donald Trump tweet. Appealing is an accurate synonym for charismatic, and there is almost nothing appealing about Rapinoe to me. Although I do view strength as an attribute, crass, dour and attention-craving are no way to go through life. And I’m referring to her, not you, Kiz.
