Giants QB Eli Manning to remain starter vs. 49ers

Eli Manning is still the man under center — for now.

The Giants quarterback will maintain his starting role for Monday’s matchup against the 49ers, coach Pat Shurmur announced Tuesday.

Manning’s availability had been up in the air, as Shurmur said “we’ll see” when asked if Manning would keep his starting job before the team’s bye. However, the two spoke about the need to play better before other steps are taken.

Furthermore, Shurmur added that fellow quarterback Kyle Lauletta would not be suspended after his arrest last week, though he will face “internal consequences” for his actions after being spoken to “numerous times” since the incident occurred.

Lauletta was arrested last Tuesday after he nearly hit a police officer with his car. The rookie was driving to practice when he failed to obey the officer directing traffic and tried to make a right turn in the wrong lane, nearly running over the officer in the process.

“First things first, I want to apologize to the New York Giants organization, my teammates, the fans and my family,” Lauletta said Tuesday. “The incident that happened last week is a terrible representation of who I am and what I stand for.

“I’m going to do everything I can to be the best teammate I can be, get back to work and try to keep moving forward one day at a time.”

Lauletta also praised Manning, who has been subjected to harsh criticism in recent weeks as some have called for benching the two-time Super Bowl champion.

Giants should replace Eli Manning, says Terrell Owens

“Eli Manning is one of the best teammates I’ve ever had,” Lauletta added. “He was there for me and he was supportive … he reached out later that day and it meant the world to me.”

The 49ers (2-7) are slated to host the Giants (1-7) at 8:15 p.m. ET in Week 10 action.
