A UFC star has reacted to the news that they will be defending their title in the main event of UFC 297 on January 20.
The polarising fighter is an ex-white supremacist and has made controversial statements about women and race in the past.
It is fair to say that the individual is an outspoken figure – who doesn’t hold back in his assessment in a wide range of topics.
Following the news that Dana White confirmed that the fighter will headline their first pay-per-view card of 2024, the particular individual doesn’t appear to be pleased with having to fight in Canada.
The fighter in question is none other than the controversial middleweight champion Sean Strickland.

On Monday, five days before UFC 295 in Madison Square Garden, White posted a video on social media announcing three main events set for January, February and March.
The three headline bouts include Sean Strickland vs. Dricus Du Plessis, Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria and O’Malley’s rematch with Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera – all of which are listed in chronological order.
Following the announcement, Strickland was quick to take to social media to express his views on defending his title for the first time in Canada.
Posting to X, formerly known as Twitter, Strickland wrote: ‘Why Canada?!?! GSP you do this bs?! No guns, no freedom of speech.. UFC you f***ing with me?!?!
Strickland, who shocked the world by defeating Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 back in September, also reacted to the news on his official Instagram page.
‘Well Canada time to bring you all some freedom. Didn’t want to fight in Jan or in Canada but was asked to help a couple ladies do their job.. and they call me sexist,’ he wrote.
His post is referring to the recent women’s bantamweight title fight that was booked between Raquel Pennington and Mayra Bueno Silva.
The divisive champion will defend his title against rising star Dricus Du Plessis. Du Plessis earned a crack at UFC gold after defeating Robert Whittaker back in July via second-round TKO.

The South African, who holds a professional record of 14-2, is yet to be beaten in UFC cage and possess a real threat to Strickland.
Rather than Strickland’s athletic ability, it is his extraordinary tirades and offensive comments that draw the most attention to him.
Just days after beating Adesanya, Strickland went viral for chasing a man with a flamethrower.
Some see him as an objectionable character giving oxygen to hateful world views, others as a joker and wind-up merchant who very deliberately cashes in on being provocative without actually believing in what he says.
Strickland again hit headlines prior to his win over Abus Magomedov back in July for a sexist and misogynistic rant.
‘We need to go back to taking women out of the workforce, and maybe that’s where we f****d up,’ he said.
‘We let women vote, no offense. Think about America prior to women voting.

The American middleweight has caused offense time and again with his bizarre tirades
‘They tried to ban alcohol, I don’t even drink but I’m not trying to ban alcohol. So, what you did, man, you let these women come into the workforce, now we make less money, you got kids raising themselves on TikTok, we need to go back to like 1942, maybe 1958 after we f****d up the Germans.
‘We need to put women back in the kitchen, only one man needs to be working, so as a collective man group we need to elect someone that’s gonna put women back in the kitchen, one man working, raise the wages, and build a f*****g wall.’
Ahead of his fight with Adesanya, Strickland revealed he punched a fan in the street. In the same week, after avoiding jail time, Strickland claimed the Australian public is not allowed to speak freely.
UFC 297 also sees the return of Britain’s Arnold Allen as he looks to get back to winning ways following his defeat to Max Holloway when he faces Movsar Evloev.
