Jon Jones has revelled in Israel Adesanya’s first career defeat as the former light heavyweight king took to Twitter to celebrate his arch rival’s failure to make history at UFC 259.
Middleweight champion Adesanya, 31, attempted to become only the fifth fighter to hold two titles simultaneously, with Polish powerhouse Jan Blachowicz standing in his way in Las Vegas.
And the 38-year-old veteran demonstrated that size is of significance, combatting Adesanya’s elusive striking with his technical boxing defence, before controlling the Last Stylebender on the ground to see out a masterful points victory.

Adesanya, 31, was denied history as Jan Blachowicz defeated the fan favourite by decision
Adesanya’s defeat – his first in the UFC – presents a huge setback for the Nigerian-New Zealander. A win over Blachowicz would have not only seen him snatch Jones’ former crown, but would have set up a super-fight with the American.
Despite missing out on a mega-money showdown with Adesanya, Jones taunted his 185-pound rival on social media.
‘December is going to be great #UFC259,’ the 33-year-old tweeted as the fight unfolded. ‘Can’t wait to make this b**** eat his words’.
Jones and Adesanya have engaged in a war of words with fans hopeful of a super-fight
However, Adesanya’s UFC 259 defeat renders the chances of a showdown virtually impossible
However, when it became apparent that Blachowicz was cruising towards a successful defence of his crown, Jones took the opportunity to hit out at Adesanya and his fans.
‘Yeah never mind, that’s not even worth my time,’ he added.
‘Great job Jan there’s two minutes left in the fight but Izzy is on bottom, great win. Definitely not expecting any surprises.
‘If you ever wrote me talking s*** about Izzy beating me, slap yourself.
‘The greatest striking MMA has ever seen? This s*** needs to stop already.. people so quick to jump on a hype train.
And Jones has took the opportunity to taunt his arch rival on social media on Saturday night
Jones took to Twitter to taunt Adesanya, saying he is ‘not even worth my time’ after the loss
‘Excuse me for enjoying this a little too much, these cartoon fans been talking crazy.’
Rather uncharacteristically, Jones’ outbursts were interspersed with a message of condolence to the middleweight champion.
‘Dare to be great, good job kid,’ he said.
While a mega-fight between Jones and Adesanya is virtually impossible at this point in time, the American is gearing up for a tilt at the heavyweight crown.
Champion Stipe Miocic takes on rival Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 later this month, with the winner expected to defend his crown against the former light heavyweight king.
