Dustin Poirier has called out Conor McGregor – and the Irishman is not too happy about it.
Poirier suffered a crushing loss at the hands of McGregor's last opponent, Khabib Nurmagomedov, at UFC 242 at the weekend but is already eyeing his next move.
After remaining tight-lipped regarding his future in the immediate aftermath of his weekend defeat, Poirier called on McGregor to step back into The Octagon for a repeat of their 2014 featherweight clash in a tweet.
"I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point," he wrote.
But McGregor issued an angry response, stating: "I fed you to the canvas in 90 seconds bro.
"You should have spoke my name with a bit more respect in that build up.
"'McGregor not next'. Motherf*****, it's McGregor always!
"McGregor is the goal! Always!
"Say that now and I'll think about it."
McGregor beat Poirier via a first round TKO back in 2014 during his rise through the ranks to superstardom.
But Poirier also followed him in moving up the weights with impressive success at lightweight, claiming the interim title before his defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov at the weekend.
McGregor had been tipped to fight the loser of the bout as his comeback fight, although he has his eyes set on a rematch with Khabib.
Immediately after the event, McGregor tweeted: "Book my rematch for Moscow".
Khabib, however, seems to have little interest in entertaining another clash with McGregor.
In the run-up to UFC 242, the Russian said: "This guy [McGregor] have to come back and make nine or ten-fight win streak. Then we gonna fight.
"Maybe people who watch this interview, they think, 'Oh, he think about this, but when UFC ask this guy to fight Conor for millions of dollars, this guy is gonna take it'. No. Fight. Come back and show who are you.
"We talk with Dana sometimes, he's a good guy, but don't talk with me about this crazy fight. I want to fight real guys – Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson, maybe if one of the greatest athletes ever, Georges St-Pierre, wants to fight. I want to fight those guys. I don't want to fight with a guy who never wins."
