The fight eventually ended in the fifth as the Brazilian forced a stoppage with powerful punches landing from the mount position.
When Smith went back to his corner at the end of the fourth, he could be heard telling his team that his teeth were falling out.
It is understood that that the 31-year-old lost his veneers but also two of his real teeth during the fight as well as suffering a fractured eye socket and broken nose.
Afterwards he explained: ‘I couldn’t keep my mouthpiece in place due to the missing tooth.
‘I looked down and it was on the canvas. So I grabbed it and handed it to him.’
Conor McGregor was watching on and tweeted about the incident, writing: ‘Unknown fact – They keep a big pint of milk cage side for any teeth that gets knocked out mid fight. What a game! #GreatFightsTonight – Double Champ King of it All.’
Teixeira was asked what he made of the moment at his post-fight press conference and said he recalled Smith calling the ref over and then said: ‘Hey, sorry Anthony, it’s just part of the fight game.’
The Fight Night took place in Florida and is the second event of three to take place in the space of a week at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
UFC 249 took place at the weekend and was the first major sporting action to return during the coronavirus pandemic albeit without fans present.
Teixeira has now won his last four and wants another run towards the heavyweight title
On Wednesday, the main event lived up to the billing and Smith started well before Teixeira took over to make it four wins in a row.
Despite his injuries, Smith’s corner kept him in there and it was a decision the American backed afterwards.
He said: ‘I’m good with the decisions the referee and my corner made. When the ref made it clear he needed to see something or he was gonna stop it, I did what I had to do to stay in the fight.
‘I come out of battle with my shield or I come out on it. That’s my rule. Period.’
