Watch Mookie Betts make shoestring grab, throw out runner at home in insane double play

Just Mookie things.

Despite a slow start at the plate, Mookie Betts is still Mookie Betts, so he’s good for at least a highlight or two a game. Thursday’s Dodgers-Pirates matchup is a reminder of that.

In the bottom of the second, Betts made a great shoestring grab on a fly ball off the bat of Kai’ai Tom, and in the same motion pirhouetted and threw out Erik Gonzalez at the plate for the insane double play.

The catch, carrying all his momentum toward the stands, and then throwing a one-hop strike to catcher is truly a mind-breaking play. The ball off Tom’s bat had an expected batting average of .580.

Betts also did it with the bat, too, leading off the game with a home run. The Pirates would tie it up soon after.

While his offense has lagged, Betts’ defense is still up to snuff, entering the game with four defensive runs saved on the year.

Low average or not, Betts is still a gamebreaker — and he’ll do it with a smile.
