Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman out for season with hip injury

If the Major League Baseball season ended Saturday, the Oakland Athletics would have the best record in the American League and evade the wild card round. Regardless of how their postseason seeding shakes out, they'll have to play without one of their top players.

The team announced third baseman Matt Chapman will miss the remainder of the season with the right hip injury that caused him to leave Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. After not initially going on the injured list, Chapman sought a second opinion on the MRI, and did not resume baseball activities at any point.

Chapman, 27, had been batting .232 with 10 home runs and 25 RBI this season. As always, he played one of the best hot corners in the game, and he has won back-to-back Gold Gloves.
