Good old-fashioned initiative landed jockey Jordan Childs the ride on Dalasan in Saturday’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Childs has wanted the ride on Dalasan since the top South Australian galloper raced in Melbourne last spring.
Dalasan won the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at last year’s Makybe Diva Stakes meeting before claiming the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on Victoria Derby day.
Childs said he started ringing Dalasan’s co-trainer Leon Macdonald after noticing the horse’s tendency to lay in under pressure in his races.
“He’s quite quirky and wants to lay in but I’m very good with the whip in the left hand,” Childs said.
“Last spring, I called Leon and tried to get on him.”
The COVID-19 situation helped Childs’ chase for the Dalasan ride with jockeys from Adelaide unable to ride in Melbourne unless they complete 14 days’ quarantine.
Childs said he resumed ringing Macdonald after Dalasan’s grinding third to Sky Punch in the race named after his trainer at Morphettville on August 29.

“I’ve always been watching him so I rang after his last start at Morphettville and left Leon a message asking to ride him,” Childs said.
“With the restrictions, jockeys can’t come over from Adelaide to ride him.
“I knew they were looking for a rider for him so I threw my hat in the ring and showed I was keen to get on him. It went my way.”
Childs knows how it feels to be on the other side of the coin after losing the ride on leading Melbourne Cup fancy Surprise Baby this spring.
But he said consistently riding winners will keep him in the frame for rides in big races such as the Makybe Diva Stakes during the spring.
He also hasn’t given up on regaining the Surprise Baby ride should incumbent Craig Williams decide to stick with his 2019 Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare.
“I have just got to keep riding winners and I’m getting a good opportunity on Saturday with Dalasan,” Childs said.
“I’ll just keep working hard and if the opportunity comes to get back on Surprise Baby, I’ll be taking it.”
TAB has Dalasan as an $8 chance in its early market on the $750,000 Makybe Diva Stakes.
