The United States have declined to comment on reports Patrick Cantlay is not wearing a cap in protest at players not being paid to play in the Ryder Cup – other than to point out that he also did not do so at the last tournament.
According to Sky Sports, the Californian is sitting in a separate area of the visitors’ dressing room with close friend Xander Schauffele amid a split in the camp, and refused to appear at the gala dinner last week.
Cantlay is the only player on the course not to be wearing a cap under blue skies and searing sunshine.
The detail adds to what has been a disastrous start for the Americans, who currently trail 8.5 – 2.5.
A US team spokesperson said simply: ‘He didn’t wear a cap at Whistling Straits.’
