Excited Gary Lineker makes cheeky X-rated Ryder Cup joke as Europe dominate

Gary Lineker has joked at how much he previously “enjoyed foursomes” while taking in the action at the 2023 Ryder Cup. General admission tickets for the Ryder Cup have long been sold out with most spectators watching on from back home.

Millions tuned in on Friday as the action got underway in the early hours of the morning. Friday morning’s session was foursomes, where teams alternate between who takes the next shot while playing the same ball.

The format has been a huge part of the Ryder Cup success as players try to navigate how to best help one another. Team USA couldn’t get anything really going through as Team Europe took the charge and never really looked back.

They ended up taking all four points of the first morning session for the first time in Ryder Cup history. And Lineker was clearly loving the display from the Europeans as he had some fun with the format’s homonym.

He wrote on X: “It’s a long time since I’ve enjoyed foursomes this much.” Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood were the final group over the line to win Europe’s fourth and final point in the morning session.

And the Northern Irishman was delighted to get the win over the line alongside his playing partner. “It’s been an unbelievable session. All week, we’ve been talking about getting off to a fast start,” he said.

“We were ready to go from the first tee shot and it’s an absolute pleasure to have this man alongside me. He can play with anyone, I’m just so happy he’s my partner this week and happy to get a point on the board for Europe.”

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley was equally impressed by Europe’s sensational start to the biennial tournament. He said: “It’s huge – I didn’t see it coming. I knew Europe were primed, I knew they had a lot of form in their team, and I knew America were a little bit under-prepared.

“I thought we were going to come out of the blocks fast, I didn’t think it was going to be this fast. What a sensational morning for Europe. It was brilliant golf – it wasn’t a fluke in any way.”
