    Sunny Edwards was blasted by ex-footballer and regular social media sparring partner Curtis Woodhouse, after his disappointing first career loss in boxing.

    Edwards, 27, dared to be brave when he put his IBF world flyweight championship on the line against WBO world flyweight champion Bam Rodriguez. Unfortunately for the Croydon based fighter, he suffered a huge injury to his left eye in the second round when Rodriguez caught him with a huge counter right cross.

    Edwards tried to fight his way back into the contest, but the towel was thrown in by his corner when he was dropped for a third time in the ninth round. Despite the character he showed in the ring, Woodhouse, who became a professional boxer when he retired from football and went on to win the BBBofC British super lightweight championship in 2014, accused Edwards of giving up in the United States.

    The ex-Sheffield United player, who made three Premier League appearances, tweeted: "Biggest night of your life and you quit like a dog. Incredible to be honest, worked so hard to get to this point and you quit like that in front of the world!"

    Woodhouse's comments did not go down well with the football and boxing public. One fan replied: "Why dig at him Curtis after he just gave us all an absolute war of a fight whilst it lasted? Brilliant for boxing I say fair play to the lad."

    A second also drew comparison with Woodhouse's chequered career as a manager for the likes of Sheffield FC and Goole, accusing him of "quitting about 5 times as a football manager". Meanwhile, other boxing fans said: "Sunny Edwards is a warrior."

    Edwards and Woodhouse have had frequent clashes on the social media platform. However, the Matchroom boxing ace would not have been thinking about Woodhouse's comments or critiques on social media.

    After the fight, Edwards said: "This is a hell of a fighter. My tricks that usually get me out of the way of shots, he was getting on to them. I just couldn't see. From the second round, my eye was completely blurry and from about round six I got cut. It was getting hard in there, more through the vision."

    He added: "I'm bitterly disappointed, but grateful to be in the main event. Flyweight boxers, we don't get this. I'll be back. Boxing is all I've got. Just a bit disappointed my eye went so early on. But, yes, no excuses from me." Edwards eventually confirmed he suffered a medial orbital fracture to his left eye which was caused by Rodriguez.
